About this rug

A stepped medallion in navy and brown sits at the center of this lovely rug. A rust field opens at the center, flanked by wide navy panels filled with small geometric rosettes and edged by bold cream zigzags. A central stepped medallion in navy and brown holds a dense lattice of small forms, with diamond pendants extending along the vertical axis. The gorgeous main border runs navy, carrying cream and rust geometric motifs around the perimeter. Narrow guard stripes in cream and brown frame this outer band on each side. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through in pale patches where the rust has thinned. It brings a strong graphic line to a small space, the cream zigzags cutting sharp against the navy panels. At 3'10" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This rug keeps that warm palette and the straight-edged medallion, though the filling is a tight geometric lattice rather than loose vine. The bold cream zigzags framing the navy panels give the piece a strong graphic outline against the rust ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
