About this rug

Columns of stylized motifs in cream and charcoal repeat on this charming rug. Worked on a faded red field, columns of stylized motifs in cream, tan and charcoal repeat without a central medallion. A beautiful cream main border carries a chain of pretty brown rosettes and geometric figures, flanked by thin guard stripes in deep red and tan. The pile is low in places, and the color has gone pale along the middle. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. It suits a calm space, keeping the soft red and cream notes subtle underfoot. At 4' by 6'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. The rugs lean toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields rather than a single dominant medallion, and a palette built on madder red and indigo. This rug keeps that repeating field layout, with no single shape at the center. The geometric motifs in cream and tan stand out against the washed red ground, framed by a border of brown rosettes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
