About this rug

The faded red field of this charming rug has a diamond medallion at the center. Set in a faded red field, a splendid central diamond medallion holds navy, sage and cream floral forms. Notched pendants extend from the top and bottom of the medallion into the open red ground. Cream spandrels fill the four corners with dainty scrolling vines and small blossoms in muted pink and green. The main border runs navy, carrying a repeat of cream and pink rosettes linked by pale vine work. The pile is worn low across the field, with the foundation showing through in scattered patches. In a narrow space, it balances the soft red against the cool navy frame. At 3'9" by 7'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to look even from a distance. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with a clear medallion and balanced corners. The faded red sits beside chalky cream and navy.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
