About this rug

Small rosettes and geometric crosses sit on the rose field of this lovely rug. Small blue and tan rosettes and geometric crosses scatter across the rose field. A handsome cream diamond medallion sits at the center, holding a near-black core and ringed by charming blue-edged flower heads. Near-black spandrels fill the four corners of the field, each carrying a single flower head. The main border is cream, worked with pink and teal geometric motifs inside narrow steel blue guard stripes. Pile runs low in spots across the face. The cream border lightens the rose field, making this piece fit a small sitting area. At 3'10" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. Until 2008 the Isparta carpet factory was still working, a center of the craft for a wide region. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that soft rose and cream, with the drawing set out in clear geometric shapes. The orderly layout places a single diamond medallion against the open field, framed by a wide cream border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
