About this rug

The lobed navy medallion of this lovely rug holds four cream cartouches. Small floral sprays and a large central form cover the rose field, leaving open ground around the main design. A lobed navy medallion sits at the center, holding four cream cartouches and small teal accents. Splendid notched pendants extend from the top and bottom of the central shape into the rose ground. Cream spandrels fill the four corners, each carrying delicate scrolling vines and leaves. The wide navy border carries cream and red blossoms circling the edge. Narrow guard stripes in gray beige and red flank the main band on either side. Pile runs low in spots over the face, with white dots marking where the weave is thin. A light antique wash left the drawing sharp while easing the colors. Rose and navy sit together in this small format. At 3'8" by 6'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. The Isparta carpet factory, a center of the craft for a wide region, kept working until 2008. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. The pale rose ground stays open while the navy border loops its motifs in a constant ring.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
