Palmettes, small rosettes and scrolling vines repeat across this lovely rug. The faded red field carries an all-over repeat of dainty scrolling vines, palmettes and small rosettes in cream, teal and steel blue, with no central medallion. A wide cream border holds a chain of delicate blue flower heads and curling leaves, edged by a narrow teal band and thin brown guard stripes. A gentle antique wash toned the colors down, yet every motif stays crisp. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through in a few patches across the field. The soft red and cream suit a small corner, keeping the space restful. At 3'10" by 6'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In the first half of 1911 the company workshop in Isparta wove about 12,318 square meters of carpet, more than any other workshop of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The largest carpet exchange in Turkey in its day was the Isparta Carpet Palace. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. The vine and palmette here are laid out in even rows across the red ground. Teal in the border and small blue flowers in the field cool the warm color.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
