About this rug

This lovely runner has a large cream medallion with stepped edges. Set within a rose field, a large cream medallion with stepped edges holds navy and brown details at its core. Gorgeous notched pendants extend from the upper and lower points of this central figure into the open rose space. The border sits on a navy ground, carrying a scroll of cream and rose palmettes. Narrow guard stripes in cream with small navy diamonds edge this band on either side. A few patches across the center have worn down to the white foundation, and the colors have eased. In a narrow passage, the rose and cream tones stay gentle beside the dark blue edge. At 3'1" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the company workshop in Isparta wove about 12,318 square meters of carpet, more than any other workshop of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The largest carpet exchange in Turkey in its day was the Isparta Carpet Palace. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to look even from a distance. This rug carries that order into its stepped medallion and scrolling border. The rose ground rests against the navy frame while cream accents mark the floral shapes along the length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
