About this rug

This lovely rug has cream diamonds with blue centers on a plum field. Cream diamonds with blue centers and small floral sprays repeat across the plum field. There is no central medallion, only the steady lattice of geometric motifs filling the space. The main border runs blue, carrying a chain of pretty cream rosettes and small geometric forms. A plain gray brown band edges the rug on every side. A light antique wash has softened the colors while the drawing stays clear. The pile is low in places, and the weave shows through in scattered patches across the field. The cool blue border balances the warm plum field in this geometric ground. At 3'5" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The largest carpet exchange in Turkey in its day was the Isparta Carpet Palace. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing in its repeating diamond lattice. The blue border and the washed plum field hold the soft tone of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
