About this rug

The large cream medallion of this charming runner holds scrolling vines. Over a mauve field, a large cream medallion holds scrolling vines in steel blue and bright turquoise. Small pendants with turquoise discs extend from the top and bottom of this central shape into the open ground. Beautiful cream spandrels fill the four corners with matching floral forms outlined in blue. A blue border carries cream floral forms with touches of rust, edged by a thin band of small turquoise dots on cream. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear, and the pile is low in places across the field. It brings a soft warmth to a narrow passage without overwhelming the space. At 2'11" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. The Isparta Carpet Palace was in its day the largest carpet exchange in its region and in all of Turkey. Isparta sits among the lakes of southwestern Turkey, a town known for Persian-influenced floral designs woven in its own gentler colors. Its palette leans chalky, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. Town work like this is orderly, and the field looks composed from a distance. This rug follows that habit with a classic medallion-and-corners layout. The mauve ground sits behind the brighter blue and turquoise details.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
