An all-over repeat of fine dark brown scrolling lines covers this charming rug. The cream field carries an all-over repeat of fine dark brown scrolling lines, with faint pale green touches inside the loops. No medallion gathers the design, and the pattern reaches each side without a border or corner pieces. A full antique wash has left no color at strength. Pile runs thin in spots, and pale patches let the foundation show. The dense linework rests against the pale ground. At 3'7" by 6'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The Isparta Carpet Palace was in its day the largest carpet exchange in its region and in all of Turkey. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the ground stays plain. Repeating scroll and tulip outlines cover the whole surface in dark brown and faded green, with no frame.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
