About this rug

Floral rosettes and scrolling vines repeat in an orderly lattice on this charming runner. The field is cream, filled with a vertical column of dainty floral rosettes and scrolling vines in light brown and pale blue. No single medallion anchors the center; instead, the pattern repeats down the length in an orderly lattice. The main border carries small flower heads in brown on a pale blue ground, edged by thin dark brown bands with cream dots. A light antique wash that softened the colors has not reached the drawing, and the pile shows a few paler patches along the field. The soft blue and brown notes suit a passage where gentle colors are welcome. At 3'1" by 6'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. Isparta was a weaving town in the lake district of southwestern Turkey, where Persian-influenced florals took on a paler local palette. Cream and rose replace the deep madder red of Persia, and the drawing stays orderly. This rug shows that restraint in a repeating column of rosettes and vines. The cream ground stays bright behind the pale blue and light brown details, so the pattern reads clearly without heavy contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
