The cream field of this lovely rug holds an oval medallion and tan vines. The cream field is scattered with tan vines and small gray brown blossoms. A gorgeous oval medallion holds a star rosette within a scrolling vine frame, with slender pendants reaching toward each end. A name is woven into the field near the top edge. A garland of charming roses and leaves in tan and gray brown rings the open ground, and a gray brown border patterned with small cream leaves runs around the outside. The pile runs low across the face, with a few thin spots. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. It anchors an entry, where the tan and gray brown keep the drawing gentle. At 3'7" by 6'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug follows that orderly plan, its medallion and garland set plainly against the pale ground. The woven name near the top adds a personal note to the standard town layout.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
