About this rug

A star-edged tan medallion holds the center of this charming rug. Worked on a cream field, a beautiful star-edged diamond medallion in tan and light brown sits at the center, a small rosette at its core. Long scrolled finials reach toward each end. The cream opens into a shaped panel with curving sides. A tan frame of dense floral sprays and vines fills the four corners and runs along the edges. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The pile is low and even across the face. The tan and brown drawing stays soft against the pale ground, giving the rug a warm look. At 3'7" by 7', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Until 2008 the Isparta carpet factory was still working, a center of the craft for a wide region. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This one keeps that orderly layout, with the vine and finials set clearly against the pale ground. The wash has taken the colors to a single warm level, leaving the tan and brown outlines distinct.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
