Deep red and turquoise rosettes sit within a diagonal lattice on this remarkable rug. A cream field displays a diagonal lattice of lovely gray brown vines framing rows of graceful deep red and turquoise rosettes. There is no central medallion, only this even repeat of flower heads seen from above across the length. The pattern runs straight to the edge, so there is no main border or guard stripe to frame the drawing. A gentle wash has muted the colors while the drawing stays crisp. The pile is full. It holds the bright turquoise and deep red steady against the pale ground. At 3'9" by 7', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. The piece maintains that orderly floral repeat on a cream ground. The turquoise leaves and deep red blossoms sit distinct within the gray brown vine lattice.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
