Scrolling vines and small rosettes cover this lovely rug in an all-over repeat. The cream field is covered in an all-over repeat of scrolling vines and small rosettes in gray brown. There is no central medallion, only a continuous pattern of flowers and curling leaves filling the open ground. The main border is lavender, carrying a chain of charming pale blossoms around the edge. Thin guard stripes of gray brown and cream flank the wide band on both sides. Wear shows lightly over the field and the border, where the pile has dropped. Gray brown and pale lavender stay paired against the cream ground. At 3'9" by 6'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them, an Ottoman report of 1917 notes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. On this rug the vines repeat evenly from end to end. The cream field remains light and uniform, while the lavender border holds a ring of small blossoms along the edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
