About this rug

Rose blossoms and violet sprays spread evenly over the open ground of this charming rug. Set in a cream field, pretty rose and dusty rose blossoms repeat with violet sprays and small green leaves in a loose floral lattice. There is no central medallion, so the flowers spread evenly over the open ground. A plain burgundy border frames the drawing, with no separate guard stripes. The pile is low across the face, and the pale weave shows between the flowers. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The dense drawing holds the soft pinks and violets together on the pale ground. At 3'3" by 6'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps the chalky cream ground and the orderly rows of flowers of the town work. Its plain burgundy border is a simple dark edge in place of a second floral band.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
