About this rug

Stylized trees and vases sit in a grid of square compartments on this amazing rug. On a deep red ground, a grid of square compartments holds stylized trees, vases and flowering plants with leaf and blossom forms in navy, cream and gold. The layout divides the field into distinct garden panels, each with its own botanical motif. Narrow bands dotted in cream separate the individual squares, creating a structured framework across the surface. A splendid dark brown main border carries small geometric marks in cream and rust. Narrow guard stripes with small dots in red and cream edge the border on all sides. The pile is full over the surface. At 4'7" by 5'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari are divided into two main groups, the Chahar Lang, or Four Legs, and the Haft Lang, or Seven Legs. In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari rugs come from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, and their signature is the garden panel. The field is divided into a grid of compartments, each holding its own tree, vase or flowering plant. This rug shows that compartmented layout, with trees, vases and flowering plants repeating in mirrored pairs across the grid. The colors remain strong, mixing deep red and navy with bright cream and gold notes throughout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
