About this rug

This wonderful rug has a central diamond medallion on a deep red field. On a deep red field, scattered sprays of navy and pale green blossoms surround a central diamond medallion. This navy core holds a cream rosette and connects to smaller ivory pendants above and below it. Large ivory spandrels frame the field corners, filled with delicate curling vines and floral motifs in navy and pink. The main border is ivory, carrying a chain of multicolor flower heads and leaves. Narrow navy guard stripes with small geometric marks edge the rug on every side. The pile is full over the face and borders. The ivory border cools the warm red center of this bright entry rug. At 3'7" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This rug keeps that vertical orientation, stretching the diamond medallion and floral sprays down the length of the field. The saturated red ground sits well against the navy and ivory drawing, giving the piece a clear graphic presence.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
