About this rug

Brown diamond guls repeat in a strict grid across this charming rug. A cream field holds a strict grid of handsome brown diamond guls dotted with small red and teal accents. No single medallion anchors the design, only this repeat of geometric forms across the pale ground. A dark brown main border holds a band of small geometric motifs in cream and black. Narrow guard stripes with zigzag lines in brown and black edge the border on each side. A few patches have thinned, and white specks show where the foundation appears. The brown geometry stands out clearly against the light background. At 4'1" by 5'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of diamond shapes, with the brown forms set hard against the cream ground. Small touches of red and teal appear between the larger brown figures, adding contrast to the geometric layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
