A column of large stepped diamonds runs down the tan field of this charming rug. A tan field carries a column of large stepped diamonds in faded red and near-black. Each diamond frames paired hexagonal shapes with small near-black cores. Rows of lovely white arches fill the panels at the top and bottom ends. The main border is deep burgundy, scattered with tiny pale dots, and narrow red stripes edge it on both sides. The pile is low in places across the center. In a corner, the tan ground softens the burgundy frame. At 2'3" by 4'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This piece retains that compact size and the repeated geometric forms worked down the length. The tan ground lightens the look, while the burgundy border holds the heavier line.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
