A mosque design with a burgundy dome makes this a delightful rug. At the center, a mosque design with tall white columns and a burgundy dome sits on a gray brown field. Green cypress trees flank the structure, while a lower panel holds a tent form in wine red. The main border is dark brown, carrying small geometric crosses in rust, edged by narrow guard stripes set with small cream dots. Full pile covers the rug. It grounds the deep earth tones with bright white accents in the drawing. At 2'7" by 3'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the deepest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that deep palette in its brown ground and deep red accents. The prayer layout fills the small format with a clear architectural scene instead of an all-over repeat.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
