Identical octagonal guls repeat in a strict grid on this amazing rug. Rows of octagonal guls fill a tan field with navy, deep red and ochre geometric forms. There is no single medallion, only this strict grid of identical tribal emblems repeated across the open ground. The main border runs deep red, carrying cream and ochre geometric figures within a wide frame. Narrow striped bands edge the field on every side, separating the central grid from the outer band. Full pile covers the face, keeping every line of the drawing sharp and distinct. It brings a strong graphic rhythm to a small space, balancing the warm earth tones with cool navy accents. At 2'7" by 4', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug holds that exact repetition, with every shape set against the light ground. The deep red border frames the tan center, creating a sharp contrast that highlights the geometric precision of the weave.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
