About this rug

Burgundy diamonds in tight rows make this a lovely rug. A handsome lattice of burgundy diamonds and small rosettes covers the near-black field. There is no single medallion; the geometric pattern repeats across the whole face in tight rows. A faded red border carries a chain of near-black diamond shapes with cream centers. Narrow cream bands frame the border on the inside and the outside. Pile runs low in spots across the field, and the white foundation shows in the most worn patches. At 4'3" by 7'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that repeating character in its grid of diamonds and small flower heads. The near-black ground and burgundy drawing give it a deep, heavy weight.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
