About this rug

Three cream diamond medallions run down the center of this wonderful rug. Small cream and brick star flowers scatter across the navy field. A column of three gorgeous cream diamond medallions runs down the center, each holding a stepped geometric core. Large brick red stepped shapes with pointed ends frame this central column on the navy ground. Small cream roosters stand in the open ground at each end. The main border is smoke gray, carrying small leaves and birds in brick, navy and gold. Narrow guard stripes in brick and cream edge the border on each side. The pile is full across the field. In a narrow hall, the cream diamonds break up the navy ground. At 3'9" by 8'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sirjan rugs

Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. Kerman weaving went quiet for a long stretch, then revived toward the end of the 19th century and became one of the great carpet industries of Persia. The Afshar tribe came to the Kerman area in the 16th century, and its weavers made both village and nomadic rugs. The weaving mixes the softer Kerman palette with the geometry of the surrounding nomadic groups. This runner keeps that angular geometry in its stepped medallions and the hooked ends of its brick red frame. The navy field holds the brick red and cream in sharp contrast. Small bird figures fill the open ground at the ends.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
