A tight lattice of rust rosettes, cream flowers and green leaves covers this lovely rug. Worked on a near-black field, graceful rust rosettes, cream flowers and green leaves form a tight lattice that runs the full length. No central medallion breaks the pattern; the drawing covers the whole ground. A wide rust border carries a scroll of pretty pink blossoms and green leaves. Narrow guard stripes in teal flank the main band, edged with thin red lines. Small white specks show through in many places across the field and border, where the pile is low. The dense drawing and the warm rust figures keep the eye moving in one steady rhythm. At 3'9" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs were woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia. This runner covers its field with a tight lattice and has no medallion. The near-black ground sets the rust figures in sharp contrast, framed by a wide rust border.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
