About this rug

A herati lattice fills the three joined lobes of this delightful rug. Across a navy field, a dense herati lattice of cream flowers, rust diamonds and teal curls fills three joined lobes. At the center, a cream lozenge with a small diamond at its core sits in a red lobed zone. A cream ground with small flowers lies between the navy shape and the border. The main border is red, carrying beautiful navy and cream cartouches, leaf shapes and oval rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in teal and gold edge the red band on either side. Full pile covers the field and each border. In a small entry, the cream lifts the navy while the red border warms the edge. At 3'5" by 6'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia. This rug has a navy lobed center set on a cream ground, with a red border around it. The herati lattice fills the navy shape closely, and the cream ground around it is lighter and more open. The cream lozenge at the center gives the navy a focal point.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
