A column of geometric medallions runs down the center of this amazing rug. Across a near-black field, rows of stepped diamonds and hooked crosses in red, rust and cream repeat down the length. A column of larger geometric medallions runs down the center, flanked by smaller diamonds and tiny rosettes. The wide border is red, carrying bands of small diamonds and zigzags. Narrow cream and black stripes frame the rug on all sides. The pile is full from end to end. It anchors a narrow passage, where the near-black ground gives the rust and cream pattern a clear edge. At 3'3" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This piece stays small, with a near-black ground setting the red and rust motifs in sharp relief. The repeating diamonds and hooked forms fill the narrow field without a single large central shape.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
