Stepped geometric medallions in rows cover this lovely rug. Rows of stepped geometric medallions fill a dark brown field, worked in deep red, muted pink and small teal touches. There is no single large figure, only this repeating lattice covering the ground from end to end. Gorgeous cream spandrels sit at the top and bottom, holding pretty scrolling vines and red blossoms. A deep red frame surrounds the field, carrying small angular forms and cream accents. The pile has thinned in places, with white dots marking the foundation. Tight drawing keeps the dark brown and deep red evenly matched. At 3'1" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. The cream spandrels at each end bring a lighter note to the brown field, framing the central lattice.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
