About this rug

Dense vines of red and pink flower heads make this a remarkable rug. The near-black field is filled with dense vines of red and pink flower heads. A splendid stepped diamond medallion anchors the center, its red frame holding a navy and cream core. Vase-shaped forms in dark red, cream and blue rise above and below it. Gorgeous red and cream stepped corner pieces occupy the four corners. A narrow camel border, finely worked with small flowers along a vine, edges the rug. Full pile covers the rug, and the colors remain strong. The dark ground keeps the red drawing bold, and the rug fits a narrow space. At 4'1" by 8'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps that long format and the dense floral drawing. Rather than a standard red field, the near-black ground sets the red vines and corners in sharp contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
