About this rug

A long rust medallion with a serrated outline fills the center of this lovely rug. Across a near-black field, a long rust medallion with a serrated outline fills the center, and a smaller black-framed hexagon with two tree motifs sits at its middle. Serrated brown shapes with small diamond cores lie above and below the hexagon, and small boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, flank it. A small red hexagon closes each end of the field, with little figures and birds in cream, orange and teal beside it. The handsome navy main border carries charming orange and cream rosettes between S-shaped ribbons, and a red zigzag stripe runs inside it. The pile is low in places across the medallion, where the red reads paler. It holds a strong vertical line, and the navy border frames the rust center. At 4'5" by 9'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps that long format, with its medallion stretching down the near-black field. Red and rust stand out against the near-black and the navy border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
