About this rug

An ivory medallion with blue details sits in a lobed red frame on this charming rug. Across a navy field, lovely scrolling vines and palmettes in deep red, rust, cream and blue fill the space around a central figure. A lobed red frame holds an ivory medallion with blue details at the center, and smaller red lobes sit above and below it. Red corner pieces edged in cream and pale blue sit in each field corner. The narrow main border has a rust ground, set with small motifs in red and blue. Narrow guard stripes in brown and steel blue frame the border on each side. The pile is low in places across the navy field, where white flecks show. The dense drawing holds the eye, and the dark ground lets the red glow. At 4'9" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece keeps that classic layout, with its medallion and corner pieces clearly set. Instead of a red field, this rug uses a navy ground, letting the madder reds stand out as bright notes against the dark blue.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
