About this rug

A tan, brick and slate blue lattice covers the near-black ground of this wonderful rug. Set within a near-black field, a dense lattice of small geometric motifs repeats in tan, brick and slate blue. A splendid stepped central medallion with notched pendants sits at the center, its core worked in slate blue and near-black. Cream spandrels with stepped inner edges fill the four corners, worked in a fine dotted pattern. The main border is red, set with charming palmettes and angular motifs in cream, slate blue and navy. Narrow guard stripes in slate blue and cream frame the design on both sides. The face and the borders keep a full pile. Placed in a corner, the near-black ground lets the tan and brick notes show without filling the room. At 4'3" by 6'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This rug keeps that stepped outline in its central medallion and the strong contrast between the near-black ground and the light drawing. The field is an all-over repeat of small geometric shapes around the medallion. The red border frames the near-black field with an angular line.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
