About this rug

Dense rows of camel boteh cover the face of this charming rug. The burgundy field holds a dense repeat of camel boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, each with a small pink center. Rows of motifs cover the face, leaving no single piece to gather the eye. Corner spandrels are absent, so the shapes reach the perimeter on all four sides. A gorgeous dark brown main border carries small pink flowers and green leaves, framed by a narrow red outer band. A tan guard stripe with a sawtooth line separates the field from the border. A few patches have worn low, and the hue lightens where the foundation appears. The warm red and camel notes suit a corner. At 3'11" by 6'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sirjan rugs

Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. Carpets from the Kerman area have been prized since the 16th century, and many of the finest vase and garden carpets of that age are now credited to Kerman. In the first half of the 20th century, rugs from Kerman province were sold in the West as Kermanshah, which is why the two names still get confused. The weaving mixes the softer Kerman palette with the geometry of the surrounding nomadic groups, so muted rose and blue are worked into angular medallions. Formats tend to be small to middling. This rug keeps that mix, pairing the soft pink centers with angular boteh shapes. Rather than a single medallion, a dense all-over repeat fills the field with a steady rhythm.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
