About this rug

This amazing rug has a large lobed medallion in burgundy at the center. A large lobed medallion in burgundy fills the center, crowded with palmette scrolls in ochre, slate blue and cream around a star-shaped core. Ivory ground with graceful curling vines fills the corners, with orange-rust bands around the field. A wide cream border carries large palmettes in blue and rust, between narrow bands of orange. The pile is full across the face, and small flowers and leaves crowd the cream ground of the corners. The deep red and cool blue can hold their own in a warm, busy room. At 4'3" by 6'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, with ivory grounds, soft blue and closely worked vines. Closely worked vines and soft blue notes run through this rug. The burgundy medallion and orange bands warm the fine drawing, giving it a richer stage.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
