About this rug

Cream vines and blue blossoms curl around the medallion of this lovely rug. On a deep red field, cream vines and blue blossoms curl around a central medallion. The core holds pale gray beige and muted pink details. Handsome cream spandrels fill the four corners, carrying the same floral spray found in the center. The main border is cream, set with graceful scrolling vines and palmettes in blue and brown. Narrow guard stripes in gray beige and blue edge this broad band on both sides. The pile is low in places across the field, and the weave shows there. The bright red field plays against the cream frame, bringing a warm focal point to a small space. At 3'7" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Near Isfahan, Nain sits on the edge of the central desert. Unlike most Persian weaving towns, Nain built its reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier. Its palette is unusually pale for Persia: ivory grounds with soft blue, and closely worked vines. This rug keeps the closely worked vines and the soft blue accents, but sets them against a saturated red ground instead of ivory. The cream border and spandrels still carry that lightness, framing the dense floral drawing in the center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
