About this rug

Three ivory diamond medallions line up along this charming rug. Navy corners and a near-black center make up the field, with a scatter of small red and pink rosettes inside a large stepped red frame. Three gorgeous ivory diamond medallions sit along the center line, each filled with red and navy forms. Navy spandrels at the top and bottom carry red diamonds and small hooked shapes. A deep red main border frames the whole piece, with a herringbone band in navy and red on each side. Small white specks show through the center, where the pile has worn low in places. Bright ivory centers stand out sharply against the near-black ground, giving the drawing a strong graphic look. At 5' by 6'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sirjan rugs

Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. Kerman weaving went quiet for a long stretch, then revived toward the end of the 19th century and became one of the great carpet industries of Persia. In the first half of the 20th century, rugs from Kerman province were sold in the West as Kermanshah, which is why the two names still get confused. Formats tend to be small to middling. This rug shows angular geometry in its stepped red frame and the three diamond shapes down the center. Red and navy are set hard against the ivory cores, giving the drawing a bold, clear outline.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
