About this rug

A large stepped black shape runs down the center of this lovely rug. The deep red field holds a large stepped black shape down the center, scattered with small rosettes and geometric marks. Three handsome ivory diamond medallions stack inside this dark core, each filled with small geometric forms. Stepped navy spandrels with orange diamonds sit at the top and bottom of the red ground. The main border is navy, carrying stylized arrow motifs in orange and cream, framed by an ivory band of geometric figures. Thin guard stripes with zigzag lines edge the border on both sides. The pile is worn low across the red and dark blue field and in the narrow borders, and the foundation shows through with white flecks. It brings a strong graphic weight to a room, the ivory centers splitting the dark red and black. At 4'11" by 7'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sirjan rugs

Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. Carpets from the Kerman area have been prized since the 16th century, and many of the finest vase and garden carpets of that age are now credited to Kerman. The Afshar tribe came to the Kerman area in the 16th century, and its weavers made both village and nomadic rugs. The weaving mixes the softer Kerman palette with the geometry of the surrounding nomadic groups, so muted rose and blue are worked into angular medallions. Formats tend to be small to middling. This rug keeps that angular geometry in its stepped central shape and stacked diamond medallions. Rather than a muted rose, the palette relies on a bold deep red and near-black contrast set against the navy border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
