About this rug

A large medallion with a serrated near-black outline makes this a charming rug. Over a deep red field, small flowering sprays and leaf shapes in near-black, green, orange and cream are set around the center. A large medallion with a serrated near-black outline holds a red ring and a diamond core with a cream center. The border is built in bands: a cream band of small colored shapes sits between near-black bands of pretty red blossoms, with a red zigzag at the outer edge. Pile runs low in spots across the field, and a few patches read paler. It grounds a reading chair, the near-black medallion anchoring the wide red ground. At 4'11" by 7'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sirjan rugs

Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. The Afshar tribe came to the Kerman area in the 16th century, and its weavers made both village and nomadic rugs. Afshar rugs woven near Kerman sometimes show the influence of the city’s workshop carpets. The weaving mixes the softer Kerman palette with the geometry of the surrounding nomadic groups. Formats tend to be small to middling. This rug keeps the angular medallion, its serrated outline set against the open red field. Small sprays are scattered around it with plenty of red ground between.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
