About this rug

Two columns of linked medallions outlined in near-black and tan run down this lovely rug. Deep red covers the field, where two columns of linked medallions are outlined in near-black and tan. Each medallion is an elongated hexagon with a small red lozenge at its core, and small near-black rosettes sit in the gaps between them. The splendid main border keeps the red ground and carries near-black stepped forms with small tree shapes. Narrow guard stripes of tiny near-black and tan zigzags run on each side of the border, and a tan and near-black key band edges the whole rug. A few low spots show in the field as white flecks. It holds a bold, warm line down a narrow room, the near-black outlines keeping the red crisp. At 5'1" by 10'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. This rug holds to that palette, with near-black drawing set hard against deep red. The linked medallions run down the long format in two steady columns. Small rosettes fill the gaps between them.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
