About this rug

Stepped diamonds holding eight-pointed stars fill the deep red field of this delightful rug. Deep red covers the entire field, where a chain of stepped diamonds is outlined in near-black, olive and brown. Each diamond holds a gorgeous eight-pointed star in near-black on a brighter red ground. Slate blue stars sit in the red spaces between the large shapes. The main border is rust red, carrying small leaf forms in dark brown, cream and blue-gray. A zigzag guard stripe in cream, brown and blue-gray edges the field on both sides. The pile is full over the face of the rug. It suits a room that needs warmth, as the near-black drawing keeps the deep red from looking too bright. At 4'1" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This rug is a little over twice as long as it is wide. Stepped diamonds repeat down the length in deep red and near-black, with slate blue stars between them.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
