About this rug

A lovely cream octagon medallion sits at the center of the deep red field. The deep red field is framed on both long sides by panels of near-black that shade toward brown. A central octagon medallion in cream holds a brown core with a small violet diamond, with violet tabs at each end. Red diamond medallions with fine branching motifs sit above and below it, and beautiful red corner pieces carry stylized trees in green and tan. A red main border carries small leaf shapes and a teal zigzag. Narrow guard stripes in violet with salmon zigzags, and a rust band of triangles, sit on either side of it. The pile is full. The strong red ground warms a narrow space without crowding it. At 4'5" by 9'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Kermanshah, the city that gives Songhor’s province its name, was founded in the 4th century by the Sasanian king Bahram IV. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong madder reds and deep blues. This rug is geometric too, with a cream octagon at the center and red diamonds above and below it. The near-black side panels and the violet stripes set a cooler edge around the red. The panels run lighter toward the bottom of the rug. Teal outlines trace the medallion, the diamonds and the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
