About this rug

Rows of small boteh in charcoal, gray and pink make this a charming rug. Rows of small boteh in charcoal, gray and pink cover a deep red field. The paisley leaf-drop repeats across the ground in a tight diamond lattice, with no central medallion. There are no corner pieces; the repeat runs straight to the frame on every side. A splendid cream main border holds small figures in red and pale blue, between narrow stripes of pale blue and red zigzag. A broad red band closes the outer edge. The pile is full across the field and the border. The cream border keeps the drawing clear against the warm red path. At 4'5" by 9'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

The shawls of the Scottish town of Paisley were so prominent on the market that the boteh has been called the paisley ever since. The Jacquard loom, invented in 1801, was first used in Paisley in the 1820s and made shawls in the boteh pattern cheaper to weave. Botteh is a motif, not a place: the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated in rows across the field. This rug keeps that rule, with small drops set in close ranks over the red ground. The motif turns up from the tribal south to the city workshops of the center. Here the drops are dark and small, and the cream border frames the red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
