About this rug

Octagonal gul emblems in cream and rust repeat down the length of this charming runner. Worked on a deep red field, columns of octagonal gul emblems in cream and rust repeat down the length, linked by thin near-black lines. Smaller stepped diamond figures in teal and brown sit around the main shapes. A splendid burgundy border carries small geometric forms in orange and near-black. Through the center the color has paled and the pile runs low in spots. The dense drawing holds the eye with its strict grid of cream and rust against the red ground. At 3'1" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug retains the compact size and the repeated octagonal shapes along its length. The red ground stays bright against the near-black outlines, while the teal accents in the secondary figures add a cool note.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
