About this rug

Octagonal guls in rust and near-black repeat in a strict grid on this charming runner. Across a deep red ground, rows of octagonal guls and smaller stepped motifs and diamond figures repeat in a strict grid linked by near-black lines. The gul is the tribal emblem, worked here in rust and near-black with small geometric centers. There are no corner pieces to break the pattern, only the steady all-over drawing across the field running the full length. A narrow border in dark brown closes the ends. The pile is worn low in several spots over the center, where white specks show against the red ground. The warm rust notes lighten the near-black design in a tight hallway. At 2'11" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug holds to the recurring geometric figures, with octagonal guls taken from the same vocabulary. The deep red ground sets the rust and near-black pattern against a warm field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
