A red hexagonal medallion sits on the charcoal ground of this charming runner. A red hexagonal medallion with pendants toward the top and bottom sits on a charcoal ground, its center holding cream and blue gray forms. The splendid main border is charcoal, set with a repeat of small cream and rust figures. Narrow guard stripes in rust edge the border. A few patches across the center show the weave. The colors have eased under a light antique wash, yet the drawing stays clear. It brings a warm red line down a hall, cooled by the charcoal frame. At 3'7" by 7'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Saveh rugs
Marco Polo wrote that the Three Magi set out from Saba, the city now called Saveh, and that they lay buried there in three large tombs side by side. When Polo asked the people there about the Magi, no one could tell him more than that three kings had been buried there long ago. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This runner keeps that mix, with a straight-edged red medallion set against a charcoal ground and cream picking out the pattern.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
