About this rug

This amazing runner has a near-black medallion set in a large red diamond. A large red diamond holds a near-black medallion with a cream geometric core and rust accents. Small octagonal rosettes ring the medallion, while splendid stepped pendants extend from the top and bottom points. The corners are near-black, carrying scattered geometric motifs in cream, olive and rust. A narrow main border runs near-black, set with small repeating figures in rust and cream. Thin guard stripes with diagonal lines frame the border on both sides. The pile is full over the face and borders. The dense drawing keeps the eye moving along the length, balancing the near-black center against the open red field. At 3'1" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds paintings by Habiballah of Sava, an older spelling of Saveh, who worked in the years around 1590 to 1610. An English consul named Abbott, who passed through Saveh in 1849, called it the most ruinous town he had ever seen. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This rug keeps that straight-edged medallion shape, though the fill inside is strictly geometric rather than floral. The warm palette relies on madder red and near-black, matching the regional description. The contrast between the bright red field and the near-black medallion creates a bold graphic effect suited to a narrow passage.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
