Bedroom Rugs

Bedroom rugs soften the first and last steps of every day, warming a cold floor and laying a calm band of color beside the bed. Each is finely woven wool, aged four to eight decades, cleaned and gently restored, with no two alike.

Because bedrooms see little heavy traffic, they suit finer, more delicate weaves, frame the bed with one large rug or flank it with a matching pair. Rest easy on a floor with a history.

How to choose bedroom rugs for comfort and calm

Bedroom rugs dress the one floor in the house chosen purely for rest, and they change how the room feels the moment you step out of bed. A hand-knotted wool piece brings warmth to a cold morning floor, a soft landing underfoot, and a quiet layer of texture that a bare room lacks. These rugs are 40 to 80 years old, their pile already worn to a gentle softness, and because bedrooms take far less traffic than living spaces they are the perfect home for the finer, more delicate weaves you want to enjoy rather than punish.

Two ways to place a rug around the bed

The most generous arrangement is a single large rug set under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending well past both sides and the foot so you land on softness whichever way you swing your legs out. Aim for at least 60cm of rug showing beyond each side and the foot. The alternative, ideal for smaller rooms, or when the perfect large rug is hard to find, is a pair of runners, one either side of the bed, matched or deliberately different. A single runner along one side works well too, next to a bed pushed against a wall.

Sizing to your bed

Measure the bed, then decide how much rug you want on show around it. As a rough guide:

  • Under a king or queen: a large area rug that reaches past the mattress on three sides frames the bed handsomely.
  • Either side of the bed: a pair from our runners gives a soft step-out without covering the whole floor.
  • A reading chair or bench: add a smaller accent rug to mark the corner.

Every rug lists its exact dimensions, and the size guide helps you picture each option in the room before you commit.

Colors that help you wind down

Because the bedroom is where you switch off, restful tones tend to serve best. Soft blues and grays quiet a room, warm sands and stone neutrals feel grounding, and dusty pinks or faded reds add gentle warmth without energy. If your bedding is plain, a patterned rug can supply all the character the room needs; if your textiles are already busy, a calmer tonal piece keeps the floor from adding to the noise. Faded, low-contrast pieces tend to read as more restful than sharp, high-contrast ones, which is worth bearing in mind for a room you want to feel quiet. Looking after a delicate piece

Bedrooms are kind to rugs, so a bedroom piece stays lovely with very little effort. A thin pad underneath adds cushioning and keeps the rug from shifting when you climb in and out. Vacuum gently now and then, rotate the rug once a year so any patch catching morning sun ages evenly with the rest, and deal with the rare spill by blotting rather than scrubbing. That light routine is all a wool rug needs to keep warming your most private room for decades more.

Questions we hear from bedroom shoppers

Should the rug go all the way under the bed? No need. Sliding it under the lower two-thirds anchors the bed while leaving the headboard and bedside tables off the pile, which looks intentional and puts the rug where your feet actually land.

Will a fine antique rug cope beside a bed? Comfortably. This is the lowest-traffic floor in most homes, so a softer, more finely knotted piece that might struggle in a hallway will last beautifully here.

Do a pair of rugs need to match exactly? Not at all. Two rugs in the same family of colors read as a considered pair; two near-identical runners feel more formal. Both work, it comes down to the look you want.

Find the piece that feels right underfoot, and know it is the only one of its kind we will ever have.
