About this rug

Lovely sprays circle a tan medallion with lobed edges. Worked on a dusty rose field, cream and sage sprays circle the central medallion. At the center sits a tan medallion with lobed edges and a cream core ringed by pink petals around a small sage star, and floral sprays above and below. A wide cream frame, clipped at the corners, carries graceful sage leaves and flowers in pink and yellow. The gorgeous main border runs dark brown, set with cream leaves and small dots. A thin near-black line edges the cream frame. Pile runs low in spots over the field, with the foundation showing through in a few patches. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The dense drawing holds the room together, and the wide cream frame keeps the rose from reading heavy. At 5'6" by 9'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug suits that palette closely, its dusty rose field and cream frame close in tone, with sage and yellow flowers added in small amounts. The flowers circle the medallion in a loose ring, and the brown border closes the design.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
