About this rug

A long scalloped panel holds a central diamond medallion on this lovely rug. Dusty rose shapes the field into a long scalloped panel holding a gorgeous central diamond medallion and floral sprays. The medallion is a notched diamond in dark green and cream, with smaller lozenges above and below it. Wide cream bands with floral garlands surround the panel. The main border is gray beige, carrying gray brown palmettes and leaves along its length. Thin guard bands in deep brown and ivory frame the edge on each side. The pile has thinned across the open field, and a pale vertical crease line shows. The soft rose and warm cream tones stay gentle together. At 5'5" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In its day the Isparta Carpet Palace was the largest carpet exchange in Turkey. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that chalky cream in the corners and the pale rose ground, with the structured floral layout of a town piece. The worn, open center gives it a lighter feel than the dense layouts it echoes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
