About this rug

A large lobed medallion in cream with a dense core makes this a charming rug. Set within a terracotta ground worn to dusty rose, scattered sprays of cream and pale blue blossoms drift around the center. A large lobed medallion in cream holds a dense core of charcoal and tan rosettes, with small pendants at the top and bottom. Small flower clusters sit in the corners of the field. The wide main border is cream, featuring a lovely scroll of muted pink and brown flowers linked by dark stems, set between narrow bands of steel blue and gray brown. The pile has thinned in spots over the face, and thin pale creases run down the field. It brings a soft glow to a room, letting the cool blue notes temper the dominant rose and cream. At 4'11" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece retains that structured layout, with the central medallion and corner elements set clearly against the open ground. The hues have softened to a single warm tone, leaving the blue details as gentle notes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
